Peppers are a popular crop for all gardeners, and they grow well in bales. These are jalapeño plants, which average about 20 peppers.

Tomatoes, of course, are the one crop everyone seems to love, so they have lots of those planted. Perry told me, “The Juliet tomato was a big hit and [the plants] have been heavy producers.” In addition, they plant squash, cucumbers, green beans, peppers, turnips, kale, basil, and collard greens, and Perry reports that everything seems to grow very well. He hopes to expand the garden and plant different varieties next year. Perry has a brother-in-law who is now excited about doing his own Straw Bale Garden next year, and he always plants a big garden, so he really likes this method. He tells me that several others have said they also want to try it next year. He said that with a 25-bale garden, he estimates he spent about $50 more this year using bales than before using bales, but the difference is “a great tradeoff for rototilling and stooping over.”
